Manikarnika Ghat this Ghat is most revered owing to the cremation ground present here. According to Hindu mythology, when Mata Sati set herself on fire after Daksh, a son of Brahma’s tried to humiliate Lord Shiva during the course of a Yagya, Lord Shiva carried her burning frame to the Himalayas, during the course of which several bits of the body started falling apart. Lord Shiva went on to establish Shakti Peeths everywhere a part of her had fell, and at Manikarnika it was her ear rings that had landed, earning the site its name. However, there are several other myths fully formed and in place as well, to explain the conception of Manikarnika, one of them owing its creation to the angry dancing of Lord Shiva which led to an ear ring of his to fall at the site which is now the Ghat. The Manikarnika Kund adjoining this structure is said to have been built by Lord Vishnu and filled with the sweat of his labours. The very well known Kashi Vishwanath Temple is in close proximity to this Ghat.
