Harishchandra Ghat

Harishchandra Ghat

Harishchandra Ghat is one of the oldest Ghats in all of Varanasi, and it is fabled to be true that at one point of time King Harishcandra himself worked as a slave on the structure that is now one of the two crematoriums in Varanasi, the other one being at Manikarnika. The Harishchandra Ghat is often refereedto as Adi Manikarnika, or the original Manikarninka. A popular belief among Hindus is that if one brings their dead relatives to be cremated here, the deceased soul gets guaranteed salvation. It is possible for one to find a discreet spot at a fitting distance and observe the cremation proceedings.
