Dashaswamedh Ghat is also one of the oldest ghats in the city, and also happens to be one of the most prominent ones. The names Dashaswamedh Ghat literally means the Ghat of the Ten-Horse Sacrifice. There are numerous legends and myths associated to the creation of this Ghat, one of which is that it was built by Lord Brahma in weolcome of Lord Shiva. Another is that it was created in the course of a yajna performed by the Great Creator here, which involved a ten-horse sacrifice. The ruler Bajirao Pesava the First set elaborate reconstruction efforts underway in the year 1740 AD, and soon after the structure saw another bout of lavish redecoration under the patronage of the Queen of Indore in 1774 AD. One of the several attractions of this Ghat that brings large numbers of visitors, devotees and tourists to its steps is the Agni Pooja, which is held in a ritualistic fashion every evening and orchestrated by resident priests of the Ghat. Close by are the Dashaswamedha Tirth and several depictions of Dashaswamedashvara and Dasaharesvara. There is also a much renowned Sitala temple.
